The appearance of foot-and-mouth disease among cattle in Japan has prompted USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to restrict imports of Kobe beef from that country.
APHIS announced the restrictions late last week, although documents on the APHIS Web site indicate that the agency notified U.S. Customs and Border Protection of the restrictions April 22.
APHIS is drafting an interim rule that would remove Japan from the list of regions recognized as free of FMD. Once published, that rule would indefinitely prohibit the importation of susceptible animals and most products from susceptible animals from Japan.
The restriction really only affects boneless cuts of Kobe beef. Other beef and beef byproducts are prohibited from Japan due to concerns about bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Fresh pork from Japan is prohibited entry due to swine vesicular disease and classical swine fever, although cooked canned shelf-stable pork meat is allowed.
Ruminant and swine products and byproducts such as milk and milk products, blood/serum, tissues, nutraceuticals and research samples must now be imported accompanied by a VS import permit that lists treatments to mitigate for FMD. Shipments not accompanied by appropriate documentation of an FMD treatment will be refused entry. |
